My career as a veterinarian started out with huge demands on time in order to practice medicine the way that I wanted. I felt rushed and found myself working overtime, with really no additional financial reward. My life was fraught with guilt for neglecting my family when I worked overtime, and guilt for my patients if I didn’t. It was only COVID that allowed me the time to take stock and gain perspective, and fear of having to choose between patient care or time with my child to push me to make change.

I now have flexibility and although successfull, I believe my business could grow exponentially with more time invested. The demands of motherhood are significant, and guilt still holds me back. Gender norms have shifted and it is normal for women to work and own businesses. However women still hold so much more of the parental and household responsibility on average, whether we prefer it this way or not. Women too often feel they have to choose between success in their careers and being a good mum, partner or homemaker. We need change and I'd like to advocate for that.
